There was hope coming out of Manchester that Wigan could hold off the Blues this Sunday afternoon, but really, today was all about West London. The scenes at Stamford Bridge were nothing short of jubilant, as 41,383 became part of history as Chelsea reclaimed their first trophy since Jose Mourinho’s reign at Roman Abramovich’s club. The Russian will be pleased with his Italian manager, Carlo Ancelotti, who made the transition to the fast-paced Premiership with a fair amount of ease. There’s no doubt in my mind that Don Carlo enjoyed a few cigars with Roman after the match, along with an appropriate* amount of champagne.
Anyway, Nicolas Anelka got Chelsea on the scoresheet, and from there the Londoners didn’t look back. Wigan seemed to be hanging on until the 31st minute, when Wigan defender Gary Caldwell was sent off for taking down Frank Lampard in the box. Caldwell was the last defender, so the referee said he had to go. Frank converted the penalty he won, and Chelsea went in to halftime with a deserved 2-0 lead.
In all honesty, Sir Alex Ferguson probably didn’t expect Wigan to be able to stop Chelsea, but no one would have expected another SIX goals in the second half. Saloman Kalou scored in the 54th, followed by Nicolas Anelka’s volley just two minutes later. Then it was the Didier Drogba show, as the Ivory Coast striker scored a hat-trick of goals in just 17 minutes (63, 68, 80). Ashley Cole added an eighth in the 90th minute, with a great strike.
Well, this is why they are champions. Chelsea may have had a blip in form in the middle of the season, but after watching a dozen performances like this throughout the entire campaign, I have to say that Chelsea deserve to lift the trophy once more. So congratulations to all supporters of the West London club, you guys did well this past year. The real question now: will they go on to win the double against Portsmouth in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
My advice: if you have money, put it on Chelsea.
And here are some pictures from the ecstatic Stamford Bridge!
Look at how proud/Italian he is!
Petr Cech’s crew celebrating with him.
Don Carlo is still very Italian.
Malouda’s son is giving him some style tips. The kid clearly has an incomprehensible amount of swag.
Drogba scores the first of his hat-trick. He makes everyone on Wigan look like midgets.
Salomon Kalou gets a yellow card/tries to seduce referee.
