Higuaín could play for France, ignored by Maradona
Real Madrid’s 21-year-old striker Gonzalo Higuaín has not been included in Maradona’s Argentinean national team and has not ruled out a switch to the French national team setup. The Argentinean is desperate to play in next summer’s World Cup and would fancy switch to Les Bleus, despite not speaking French.
In an interview with So Foot Higuaín said, “It’s pleasing that [France manager Raymond] Domenech is interested in me, especially since the France team are a world power and then there is Karim Benzema, a very good player… Therefore you never know.“
Higuaín can play for France as he was born there to an Argentinean father. He has not completely given up breaking into the Argentinean national team. Higuaín said, "I am working hard every day so that [Argentina manager] Maradona calls me up… I want to take part in the 2010 World Cup so I am not completely losing hope, even if I don’t really know why he continues to forget about me in his call-ups.”
Higuaín made one appearance for Argentina, in February 2008 in a friendly with Guatemala, scoring two goals in a 5-0 victory. The match was not recognized by FIFA, allowing him to switch his allegiance.
Higuaín has scored 35 goals for Real Madrid since joining from River Plate in 2007 for £11 million. In the 2008-09 La Liga season he scored 22 goals.
