Oguchi “Gooch” Onyewu signed a three-year contract with Italian club A.C. Milan and will move on a free transfer as his contract at Belgian side Standard Liege expired. Numerous European clubs such as Ajax, Fenerbahce, Real Madrid, Birmingham City and Fulham had previously sought the American centre-back. Onyewu joined Standard Liege in 2004 and has since obtained Belgian and EU citizenship, easing his transfer to Italy. Onyewu is one of the only Americans to have experienced the Champions League, so the continent’s largest competition should be one that Onyewu can contribute to.

Onyewu performed very well for the United States in this summer’s FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa. Onyewu will be the Rossoneri’s first summer signing. At Milan’s first pre-season training session fans protested the transfer of their star Brazilian playmaker Kaká to Real Madrid and the lack of signings by the club. While Onyewu may not be a “big” signing by the Milan’s standards, he is large enough to make his presence felt throughout Serie A.
