Stoke didn’t allow Besiktas to give continuity to their great start in Europa League Group E at the Britannia Stadium. The Potters were able to defeat the Turkish side after turning tables due to a penalty goal.
Hilbert opened the score for Besiktas with only 13 minutes into the game. But record signing Peter Crouch equaled two minutes later. Stoke’s second and final goal only came at 78’, with Walters successfully converting a penalty kick.
Besiktas had given no chance in the first round, hammering Maccabi Tel Aviv 5-1, while Stoke didn’t get more than one point for the draw against Dynamo Kyiv.
Today’s win allows Stoke to pass the Turkish team in the table, leading the group with four points.
In the other Group E match, Maccabi Tel Aviv and Dynamo Kyiv couldn’t grab a win, with the score being set at 1-1. Micha, for the home side, and Ideye, for the Ukranians, were te goalscorers.
