AVB backs Chelsea new stadium plans
Chelsea manager André Villas-Boas is supportive of a move from their current home to a new stadium and has backed the club’s decision to repurchase the freehold of Stamford Bridge from Chelsea Pitch Owners (CPO).
Chelsea are planning to sell the freehold in order to finance their new stadium project but some supporters seem to be against the idea.
“The most important thing for us is to position ourselves regarding our future. The club has made a wise decision”, AVB said.
He then compared the current scenario at the Blues with the one from his former club Porto, of whom the 33 year-old has been a life-long supporter. The Portuguese champions made a move to Estádio do Dragão in 2004, leaving behind a much beloved venue.
“When Porto left the old stadium, nobody liked the name, nobody liked the site, nobody liked the stadium and nobody liked the idea of moving, because the historic presence of the old stadium on that site meant something enormous for the fans.”
“But if you go back to Porto now, there is not one single person who remembers the old stadium. Because it tooks us into the future, brought us more revenues in the end, and made us play in a magnificent stadium.”
