Analysing the Champions League top scorer odds

There are only a couple of games left of the 2023-24 Champions League group stages at the time of writing.

Therefore, this could be the last chance that forwards get to perhaps ‘stat-pad’ against the lesser opposition before the going gets tougher in the knockout stages.

Alvaro Morata and Rasmus Hojlund are currently the top scorers in the competition with five goals apiece.

However, those having a bet on Champions League Golden Boot winner will likely want to consider someone who plays for a team that’s expected to go far in the tournament.

That said, let’s assess the favourites in the Champions League top scorer market at this stage of the competition.

Erling Haaland

It will come as no surprise that Erling Haaland is the market leader to be named the Champions League top scorer for the second year in a row.

The Norwegian goal machine bagged an impressive 12 goals in last year’s competition as he helped spur Manchester City to their maiden success, and he’s firmly in the hunt again at this stage.

Haaland has four goals in as many games, making up for lost time when failing to score against Red Star Belgrade and RB Leipzig with successive braces against Young Boys.

Harry Kane

When Bayern Munich signed Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, it was a clear sign that they want to be competitive in the Champions League again.

Bayern have failed to get past the quarter-final stage of the elite competition since their win over Paris Saint-Germain in 2020, and the departure of talisman Robert Lewandowski was a major blow.

However, England’s record goalscorer has already appeared to make the Bundesliga giants a real threat to Manchester City’s title.

Kane has also netted four times in four games, scoring in the 4-3 win over Manchester United before bagging three across two games against Galatasaray.

Kylian Mbappe

You would need to be a brave person to back Kylian Mbappe for the Golden Boot at this stage, as Paris Saint-Germain are by no means guaranteed a place in the knockout stages.

The French side are second in Group F, but they have two difficult games against Newcastle United and Borussia Dortmund still to come.

Mbappe is currently only on two goals as well, so even if PSG are to progress to the round of 16, it’s unlikely he would be able to outscore Kane or Haaland unless he switches on the style.

Alvaro Morata

The current leading scorer, Atletico Madrid appear to be in a prime position to progress from Group E as they are two points clear of third-place Feyenoord and will likely need just a point when they meet next up.

The Spaniard scored twice against the Dutch side when Atletico won 3-2 on matchday two, and if he can grab a couple more goals at De Kuip and score against Lazio as well, then he might head into the knockouts with a healthy advantage.

Julian Alvarez, who has three goals in three games for Manchester City, is next in line and is a tempting choice at 20/1 in the football predictions.
