Roma are ready to make an offer for Ajax right-back Gregory van der Wiel and are set to start bidding at £4 million for the soon-out-of-contract defender.
Van der Wiel has been one of the highest-rated right-backs in Europe and has captured the attention of giants such as Chelsea or Barcelona over a year ago, despite the interest was frozen by an inconsistent season, where the player suffered a number of injuries.
With the Blues and the Blaugrana not in the race for the player any more, Valencia were the side who got closest to a swoop but the negotiations broke down earlier this season.
However, it is unlikely that Van der Wiel will continue wearing the Ajax shirt next season as he only has one year left in his contract, leading to Roma's interest. The Italian side seem now to be in the pole position to land the 24 year-old, who is expected to have yet another chance to show himself with Holland's jersey at Euro 2012.
