Two goals from Van Persie gives victory to Arsenal

Captain Robin Van Persie doubles and gifts the Premier League’s third victory to Arsene Wenger’s side, as Arsenal win 2-1 over Sunderland.

Arsenal have achieved their third victory at the Premier League this season, as they won 2-1 against Sunderland, at the Emirates Stadium, with captain Robin Van Persie excelling and netting two goals for his team, whereas Sebastian Larsson scored for the visitors.

The first goal came at just 29 seconds into the game, where Gervinho assisted Van Persie for the strike, after being cleared by Sunderland’s defence, sliding the ball to Arsenal’s captain.

Gervinho continued to press forward, as he managed to pass through the Black Cats defence once again, but this time Wes Brown was alert and cut out the Ivorian shot across the area.

However, the Gunner’s dominance of the game started seeing the visitors fight back quite determinedly, and formal Arsenal midfielder Sebastian Larsson got the equaliser goal at 31 minutes with a stunning 25-yard free-kick which gave no chance for Szczesny to defend such strike.

Motivated Sunderland got an opportunity to take the lead, towards the end of the first half, as Sessegnon crossed for Cattermole who headed the ball towards Szczesny’s net, but this time the Polish goalkeeper saved the ball from getting into the net with a great defence.

As the second half started, Arsenal regained total dominance of the match with several more goal opportunities, as the game also became more fierce with referee Howard Webb having to intervene much more than during the first half.

Gunners’ Andre Santos, Mikel Arteta and Walcott failed to succeed at their free-kicks and as the end of the second 45 minutes approached, the 1-1 draw was seeming to be the inevitable result.

However, in the 83rd minute captain Van Persie once again came to guarantee his team would not reach the headlines with negative subjects, as he scored his second goal of the afternoon and the final goal of the match, with a fantastic free-kick over the Sunderland net, more precisely into the top corner.

With these three points, Arsenal climbed into the top half of the Premier League table, whereas Sunderland managed to keep out of the relegation zone, but only through having superiority in number of goals scored.
