FA Cup: Rooney seals United progression
Manchester United qualified for the FA Cup fourth round after sealing a 1-0 win over West Ham at Old Trafford, on Wednesday night.
An early goal from Wayne Rooney was enough to dump the Hammers out of the FA Cup competition, in what was a successful return from injury for the England international.
Rafael was the only player retained from the Red Devils’ weekend clash against Liverpool, with Sir Alex Ferguson making 10 changes for the FA Cup clash.
United started stronger and it took just nine minutes to open the scoring, with Rooney the man to break the deadlock scoring his ninth goal of the campaign.
Anderson released Chicharito with a superb through ball down the left and the Mexico international scampered into the area before unselfishly squaring the ball to Rooney, who poked home from close range.
The visiting side had some good chances to score an equaliser but the hosts did well to hold on to a narrow lead as they continue to fight on three fronts and head into the fourth round with a visit from Fulham.
