Wayne Rooney banned for three matches
England striker, Wayne Rooney, was sent-off at the Euro 2012 qualifier’s away match against Montenegro for kicking Miodrag Dzudovic. This Thursday, UEFA revealed their decision to ban the 25-year-old player for three matches.
Given the fact that his suspension can only happen in the same competitive championship, Rooney will not be present at the whole of the Euro 2012 group stage, which will take place in Poland and Ukraine.
This is reportedly causing a selection issue for England’s coach Fabio Capello, as he had already admitted that he would not choose Rooney for the warm-up matches, in order to try other alternative players for Rooney’s absence.
The Italian manager has several other great options, including Aston Villa’s striker Darren Bent, Bobby Zamora, Peter Couch, or even Birmingham's young sensation Daniel Sturridge.
The FA are preparing to launch an appeal to UEFA’s decision within the next three days, as they issued the following statement:
“Further to UEFA's decision to impose a three-match suspension on Wayne Rooney following his sending off against Montenegro, the FA await the full reasons from the disciplinary committee, and will give full consideration to the decision internally, before deciding on any response to UEFA or making any further public comment.”
