Hargreaves treated like “guinea pig” at Manchester
Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves said he felt like “a guinea pig” at Old Trafford as the club forced him to take injections, which put at risk his career after serious a knee tendon injury.
The England international had to undergo surgery twice to treat a persistent tendinitis during the 2008/2009 season but battled for fitness ever since, not managing more than six minutes in the remain of his contract.
He now blames the pain-killing injections the club gave him.
“I’ve had to be a guinea pig for a lot of treatments”, he reportedly said.
“I received some injections and my tendon was never the same. I tried to get back on my feet and the [Manchester United] medical staff said my tendon was good, but it felt like I was made of glass.”
The player, who had a summer move to Manchester City on a free transfer, admitted the injections “had a huge impact” and that he “probably shouldn’t have had them”.
Blames on Sir Alex Ferguson as well
Hargreaves’ criticism at the Red Devils wasn’t limited to the club’s medical staff as he also targetted former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
The midfielder claims the Scotsman forced him to play a game against Wolves when he had complaints about a hamstring problem.
“I was just going to try to get through 45 minutes because that would have been a start. But I didn’t even last five. I wasn’t surprised because I had said to them that I had a hamstring problem, which I obviously did have.”
