Should Hopes Be High for Canadian Clubs in the 2024 MLS Season?

A Football Report

The new MLS season is underway and the three Canadian teams in the league will be hoping to have successful seasons.

FC Toronto are the only Canadian club to have won the Supporters Shield and the MLS Cup. That was back in 2017 and the long wait for more titles continues. Vancouver Whitecaps and CF Montreal are yet to win either of the two main titles that are up for grabs in the MLS.

Last season saw Vancouver Whitecaps finish sixth in the Western Conference. That took them into the play-offs but they lost in their first match 1-0 to Los Angeles FC. The other two Canadian clubs both played in the Eastern Conference and neither made it into the play-offs.

CF Montreal only missed out by a couple of points after only winning one of their last five matches. Toronto FC didn’t enjoy anything like a successful season and finished bottom of the Eastern Conference with only four wins in their 34 matches.

Canadian soccer fans also avidly follow what is happening in Europe. Recent years have seen an increase in the number of online sportsbooks where gamblers can bet on European football. Last season saw Manchester City become the champions of Europe. Canadian gamblers wanting to bet on the knockout stages of this competition can check Champions League betting odds via this link.

Can we expect better results in the 2024 MLS season? Vancouver Whitecaps are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. They didn’t exactly splash the cash in the transfer market in the lead up to the new season. Ade Adekuge was signed from Turkish club Hatayspor for $1.08 million but other signings were all free transfers.

The pressure will be on striker Brian White who scored 15 goals in the MLS last season. Losing Simon Becher to AC Horsens and Sergio Cordova to Alanyaspor are blows that the club will have to try and overcome this season. Live betting on their games shouldn’t be dull though.

The only way is up for Toronto FC as they try to recapture the glory days of seven years ago. Only four players scored more than one goal in the MLS last season with the top scorer netting just five times. Cassius Mailula has been signed from South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns but another difficult season looks likely.

CF Montreal will want to make the play-offs this season and have been busy in the transfer market, especially up front. Mattias Coccaro has been signed from CA Huracan and Dominik Yankov has arrived from Ludogorets Razgrad.

With Kwadwo Opoku (top scorer last season), the spending of around $4 million may well see them enjoy a more successful season in the MLS this year.

Trophies might not be won by the three Canadian clubs in the MLS but two may well make it into the play-offs.
