A Football Report

Euro 2008 starts tomorrow and it is a wide open tournament.

The 16 best nations in Europe are ready to start a three-week championship to find out who is the #1 out of the 16. Germany go into the tournament as the bookies favourites but the darling of the pundits seem to be Spain. This surprises me as every two years they come in heavily touted with a nucleus of talent before in fighting screws them over.

Whilst on paper Spain are a good pick, I just can't get past the fact that they've always imploded in my lifetime and can't back them. The winner though I feel could well come from the so-called 'Group of Death'. Italy, France and the Netherlands make up three-quarters of the quartet and all are teams that can legitimately win the competition.

Italy losing Cannavaro is a massive blow to their chances. He is one of, if not the best central defender on the planet. If they can absorb that then it'll be very impressive. France don't scare me but then we get to the Netherlands. I don't know why but I just have this feeling for them this time around. No-one is talking about them, they are sailing in under the radar in a punishing group, they have a strong squad with spectacular forward players and a strong defence.

The other team that I think can cause a surprise is Croatia. They have two players who are amongst the most naturally gifted players in the field and they'll both grace the Premiership next season. Niko Krancjar has helped Portsmouth to FA Cup glory this year and Luca Modric will join up with Tottenham Hotspur.

Greece won the whole thing in 2004 playing the most boring, negative style of football imaginable. Hopefully this time around, attacking prowess will win out and we'll get a tournament for the ages. If you want to tell us who you think will win Euro 2008 then please discuss it on our forums.
