5 (desperate) reasons to be hopeful as an England supporter!

Every World Cup, I confidently predict England will win. I can’t help it, I’m an optimist, I’m a glass is overflowing kind of guy. And I daren’t let myself voice any doubts in case the Football Gods are listening and decide to punish England for my lack of faith.
As a result, I’ve generally ended up midway through the tournament with egg on my face, my brash declaration - ‘no, we really will do it this year, I can feel it’ - in tatters following another disappointing result. After England’s embarrassing draw with Algeria my face is particularly eggy.
Can England win the World Cup? All the evidence would say no. There’s little confidence and zero creativity. Our top players are going missing and appear fatigued, and we are yet to settle on a formation or a first eleven.
But I still have hope. There’s got to be some positives we can grasp at. We can still win it, right? Right…? I’m not sure I’m even convincing myself, but here are five rather desperate reasons to be hopeful:
