Argentina’s Biggest Derby, in the heart of Brazil

More than 4000 km from the epicenter of Argentinean football, Buenos Aires, a seasoned rivalry is gaining new expression in the small Brazilian state of Sergipe, where the tradition of naming new clubs has been taken to an unexpected extreme.

Inspired by Diego Maradona’s exploits during the 1982 World Cup, local fans organized the Boca Júnior Futebol Clube in 1993, adopting the name and colors of Maradona’s former team. While Brazilians naming their club after one of Argentina’s most prominent teams is surprising in and of itself, within just a few years, nearby fans created a natural rival by organizing Sergipe’s very own River Plate.

While neither team plays in front of hundreds of thousands of fans - rather, hundreds - the energy, passion and dedication to the community derby is just as pure as that displayed in Argentina's Superclásico, a fact that filmmakers recently sought to capture in a documentary titled The Other Superclásico.

Check out the documentary above - even if you don’t speak Spanish or Portuguese - and be sure to visit the project’s website for more information. [Posted by Maxi]
