Jose Mourinho will get praise for another tactical masterpiece, but there was someone who shined brighter than “The Special One” last night at the Bernabeu: Diego Milito. While Inter’s defence are truly the best in the world, the trifecta of Samuel Eto'o, Wesley Sneijder, and Diego Milito were dealt almost full responsibility for getting on the scoresheet for the Nerazzuri. Milito has an absolutely stunning season, and the Argentine’s performance in Champions League final against Bayern Munich screamed to Maradona, “I am one of the best in the world.”
Of course the match was complex and full of heroes, and the names of Zanetti, Lucio, Sneijder, Chivu, and Maicon must be mentioned as well, but Milito simply made the Bayern Munich defence look silly. Not the fastest, nor the strongest, the striker used his superb technique and intelligence to make perfect runs and glide past off-balance defenders. Despite being the captain, Zanetti was the vice-hero, as he did brilliantly to contain Arjen Robben throughout the entire match. Why isn’t he going to the World Cup again? I’m sure most Argentineans were asking themselves that after watching their all-time most capped player lift the Champions League trophy. As I said earlier, this was the time for football legends to become football gods, and Zanetti is certainly now a deity. As a neutral, I truly enjoyed the match. But I’m sure Dominic, being Portuguese, will naturally delve deeper into analyzing and praising Mourinho’s tactics, while Mirko is probably still out celebrating in Milan as we speak, but I’m sure he’ll share his thoughts on the match that is always more than a match. Anyway, congrats to Inter, and to Bayern as well; both sides have had remarkable campaigns. Highlights and pictures are below!
