The Rainbow Laces Movement

This past weekend, rainbow laces were distributed to every footballer across all 134 professional clubs in the UK. Each player has been asked to wear the special laces in their club fixtures on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September. The campaign’s ‘Right Behind Gay Footballers’ message is simple: change attitudes and make the beautiful game more gay-friendly.

Laura Doughty, deputy chief executive of Stonewall, said: “It’s time for football clubs and players to step up and make a visible stand against homophobia in our national game. By wearing rainbow laces players will send a message of support to gay players and can begin to drag football into the 21st century.”

QPR’s Joey Barton tweeted his support for the campaign, writing: “Show that people's sexuality shouldn’t be an issue. Join the rainbow laces movement.”

Stonewall, Britain’s largest charity for lesbian, gay and bisexual equality, will be announcing full details for the campaign shortly, and in the meantime they’re encouraging the use of the #RBGF hashtag for fans to show their support. So hey, join us in #RBGF-ing. And can someone send us a pair of those laces? [Posted by Eric]
