NYC Soccer: Captured

It seems like every month there’s a new group, fully equipped with ambition and artistic prowess, that tries to capture / uncover / reveal / explore the soccer / football / fútbol / futebol scene in New York City. It’s great to see, but it’s also been done. Over and over. The NYC soccer scene is one of the best in the world. It’s true, you can find dozens of games in every borough, every day. We’ve done it with Polish / Jamaican / Colombian communities. But the annual presentation of the Empire City as an up and coming soccer mecca is weary. Of course, it’s romantic, but that romanticism prevents one from genuinely understanding how far the beautiful game has developed under these skyscrapers.

If you want 8 minutes of soft, slo-motion shots of NYC, click here. But those shots of players from different nations dribbling a ball during sunsets and sunrises with buildings in the background can only take you so far. It isn’t artistic to ignore the essence of what creates an environment. And that essence is the people. If you want to learn some actual stories told by players from every corner of the globe, I recommend learning about New York City’s World Cup, The Cosmos Copa, in this short documentary. If you’re in town, the final is this Sunday at 2pm, too. [Posted by Eric. I'm off to play here]
