Germans take advantage of lackluster United and create a bad day for England fans as Rooney walks off injured
The pride and joy of England this year, Wayne Rooney, hobbled off with an ankle injury to top off a horrible day in Deutschland for Manchester United, who lost to Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena 2-1. Rooney actually started the game perfectly for United, punishing Martin Demichelis, his Zorro mask, and his atrocious attempt defending with a close-range volley off of Nani’s freekick 66 seconds into the game. However, Bayern were clearly the dominant side in terms of possession and chances created. With numerous opportunities to equalize wasted, Franck Ribery stuck a bit of luck late in the second half off his 20-yard freekick, which actually deflected off of Rooney into Edwin Van Der Sar’s net.
United seemed content with a 1-1 draw, as did Bayern. But a sloppy bit of defending from Rio Ferdinand in the closing minutes of injury time gifted Ivica Olic a simple tap-in to win the first leg of the quarterfinal. Thing couldn’t be too much worse for Manchester United at the moment: 1) losing the first leg of the Champions League 2) losing Wayne Rooney to injury 3) having to play Chelsea on Sunday right before the return leg of the Champions League. Ouch. The Germans strike once again. Speaking of the England-Germany rivalry, this World Cup 2010 advert is absolutely top class. “Two World Wars and One World Cup!"
