If you haven’t heard yet, a strike in the United States’ Major League Soccer was avoided over the weekend, and a new five-year collective bargaining agreement was agreed upon between the players’ union and the MLS’ administration. Apparently there will be guaranteed contracts (details to come on how many), improved freedom of movement by players out of contract (not quite free agency) and “greatly improved compensation” for players. While this is great news, the league will, unfortunately, be without its biggest star: David Beckham (no not Landon Donovan). It is a World Cup year, so even American fans of footy are going to be excited enough without the free-kick maestro. I wanted to contrast the classy side of the Englishman with the furious, rage-filled entertainment that we’ll be missing out on. You know, the good and the bad (or the more good, if reckless tackles and angry banter are what you’re into).
