Injury Update: Portuguese/Porto Winger Silvestre Varela is forced to miss the World Cup
By Dominic Vieira
FC Porto’s talented winger Silvestre Varela has been forced to miss the rest of the season after breaking his left fibula in training yesterday, one day before the League Cup Final against rivals Benfica. It is almost certain that he will not feature at the World Cup as he won’t have enough time to recover fully.
Varela, 25 years old, has been enjoying a very successful first season with FC Porto and his strong performances earned him a call-up to the Portuguese national team. He recently made his international debut against China and it was likely that he would be part of the 23 men travelling to South Africa. Unfortunately, he will add to Carlos Queiroz’s huge headache as Portugal’s key players: Pepe and Bosingwa are expected to not play at the World Cup. No one likes an injury (unless you’re a Brazil, North Korea, or Ivory Coast supporter), so we wish Varela a quick recovery.
