Clube Regatas do Flamengo, commonly known as Flamengo or ‘Mengão’ in Brazil, is the most popular team in the country. Like many clubs throughout the world, they retired the number 12 jersey to honour their supporters, the 12th man. The documentary 'Pulmão da Arquibancada’, which translates to 'Grandstand’s Lung’, explores the Raça Rubro Negra, the largest and most influential organised Flamengo supporters club which started in the late 70’s. They’re renown for their devoted dedication where they stand throughout the entire match, lighting flares, passionately chanting and dancing; an iconic 'carioca’ football party. This documentary which took 5 years to complete, closely accompanies the fans on both home and away matches, also features interviews from former heroes Zico and Adílio, amongst others, made it’s first appearances last month in selective cinemas and has been well received in Brazil. [DV]
