It is January, 2008. As Ronaldinho waits to be brought on in Barcelona’s Copa del Rey quarter-final at the Camp Nou, a penalty is awarded against Villarreal – they are, with Barcelona already 1-0 up, going out of the competition. A 20-year-old Lionel Messi takes the spot-kick, but his shot is palmed away by the goalkeeper. Barcelona hold on, and Villarreal are out.
The next day, Ronaldinho is told of Messi’s wish to learn to take free-kicks like the Brazilian. He laughs. 'Well, he should learn to take penalties first.' [MG]
