Five Hopes For A Modest MLS Cup 2010: Winter in Toronto provides backdrop for niche cup experience

By Eric Beard, Boston
After a long arduous 8 months the 2010 MLS Cup has arrived and will be decided tonight on BMO Field in Toronto where fans and players alike will have to put up with the Canadian winter that is setting in. As a supporter of the league, it’s best to take the 15th MLS Cup for what it is. No more, no less. It’s not ideal, but it’ll do. If LA-NY was the cup everyone wanted, then this Dallas and Colorado match-up will please MLS’ small market of hipsters.
With FC Dallas and the Colorado Rapids overtaking the likes of the Los Angeles Galaxy and last year’s MLS Cup champs Real Salt Lake, the final is Spain vs. Netherlands-esque in that we’re certain to have a new club winning the MLS Cup. FC Dallas appear to have the edge, or at least that’s what the betting companies would like you to think.
It’s always easy to use weather as an excuse or a intangible point of commentary before a cup final like this one, however, with flurries dropping down on Toronto FC’s pitch and freezing temperatures expected Colorado will be right at home whereas FC Dallas squad filled with South and Central American flair that we all know doesn’t exactly shine its brightest in sub-zero conditions. Definitely keep an eye on league MVP David Ferreira. Though I’ll be watching, I’ll be happily doing so from the comfort of my home. But for those select athletes and fans who made the journey to partake in tonight’s events, I have 5 hopes for this unconventional MLS Cup experience.
