Paul the octopus, the eight-armed Nostradamus of the deep, has died at his aquarium in Germany.

The clairvoyant cephalopod enthralled the whole planet during this summer’s World Cup in South Africa by predicting the outcome of all of Germany’s seven matches, as well as predicting Spain as the eventual winners.

Food was placed in two boxes, each one with a flag to represent the competing countries, and Paul would choose which box to feed from.

Octopuses only have an average lifespan of two years, and old-man Paul was over two-and-a-half. He had achieved a lot in his short life, and his memory will live on as inspiration to man and mollusc alike.
