The beauty of football is all but lost; this is now ‘The Ugly Game’

The Wayne Rooney saga, coupled with disgraceful pre- and in-match violence and racial abuse, has led me to lose faith in football. And it’s all happened in the past week.

Shouldn’t football be an escape? Certainly, the advertisements leading up to the World Cup persuaded us that it was (“football is the global language”). Football is where people can put their problems aside and focus on ‘the beautiful game’. In similar fashion to the manner in which Brazilians convinced all in football that ‘joga bonito’ existed, FIFA and the rest of their propaganda whoring donkeys have exuded to the planet the idea of football being ‘the beautiful game’. Each goal is a universal celebration – a celestial party, and everyone is invited. That is what football is about, right?
