Nelson Mandela: The Liverpool FC Supporter
We had to dig deep for this one. It turns out the legendary South African human rights and anti-apartheid activist was able to meet Liverpool when the club was on tour in South Africa in the summer of 1994. Serving as the President of South Africa in ‘94, Mandela was proudly presented with a Reds shirt by John Barnes, the club’s captain.
In a 2003 interview with the FA, John Barnes admitted that he was lucky enough to spend three surreal hours talking with Mandela. Barnes said, “Even as a kid, I didn’t have heroes that I would chase for their autograph. But Mandela was different - he is the only man I have been properly in awe of… I am not ashamed to say I had my picture taken with him and it hangs proudly on my wall at home.” It was during those three hours that Mandela told Barnes that he was a fan of Liverpool FC.
The spark that led to a little research on the Mandela-Liverpool connection came from a “105 celebrity fans” article on Liverpool’s official website from 2003, which also includes the likes of Dr. Dre, Pope John Paul II, Samuel L. Jackson, Halle Berry, Elvis Costello, and Michael Schumacher…

Recherché football, vibrant collectiveness, reflection, and music looking back to the future

In my opinion, the greatest opportunity football has, in its position as the heart of sport and even culture in general, is promoting an appreciation for the game in unlikely places. These trends flare-up around massive international tournaments, such as the World Cup, the EUROS, and even Copa América to a degree. Last summer, amongst all of the madness, an esoteric partnership was particularly refreshing to see. The Fader, a leader in music, style, and art, teamed up with Nike to produce the Pitch Perfect program that ambitiously captured the “collective consciousness of togetherness, happiness, and just joy in celebration” that the World Cup provided. Along with a set of videos, there were 6 Pitch Perfect mixtapes with artwork from Siggi Eggertsson, one that represented the culture of each continent.
The South America mixtape resonates with my conception of the passionate South American spirit, but with the weekend approaching I thought I’d leave you with these tapes to accompany you on the pitch, in a park, or en la playa. EURO 2012 is nearly here (thinking on a macro-scale, mind you) and I can’t wait to see what some of the world’s most innovative minds create. What’s the most inspired football project you’ve witnessed?

The Best Assists of the 2010 World Cup

You’ve already seen the video of all the red cards in the 2010 World Cup but now it’s time for something of another variety. Here are fifteen of the best assists from last month’s tournament. From Rafael van der Vaart to Robinho, check out the finest flicks, crosses and through-balls. My favourites are Felipe Melo’s, Bastian Schweinsteiger’s and Robinho’s. Which are your top assists from the World Cup?

Who is the villain of the 2010 World Cup?

June 11, 2010 - South Africa - Football - South Africa v Mexico FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 - Group A - Soccer City Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa - 11/6/10..FIFA president Sepp Blatter (L) and South African president Jacob Zuma before the match.

By Eric Beard

In 2006, Marco Materazzi stood out to many as a villain for his unbecoming words that caused Zinedine Zidane to lose his cool, sparking the infamous headbutt. However, this time around, there are all sorts of villains. From the FIFA administration’s reluctance to provide referees with the tools to make correct decisions to absolutely atrocious calls made to handballs to cursed celebrities, South Africa has been the home to a whole lot of controversy. Here’s my list of 2010’s villains that were present in Africa.

Sepp Blatter and FIFA

Always happy to be the centre of attention, Blatter and his stubborn, old-school ideas have made neutrals and supporters of the likes of the United States, England, and Mexico outraged. Goal-line technology, in some form, is needed in football. At least when the stakes are this high. But Blatter, in his dictator-esque role, is no stranger to stubborn, illogical thought. Conservative in his ways, the winners of matches have been placed in jeopardy because of his reluctance to use some sort of video replay at the game’s biggest stage. Sepp, this is a disgrace to football.

The Referees

June 18, 2010 - South Africa - Football - Slovenia v United States of America FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 - Group C - Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa - 18/6/10..USA's Benny Feilhaber and Michael Bradley (R) remonstrate with referee Koman Coulibaly (C) after Maurice Edu's (Not Pictured) goal was disallowed.

From Jorge Larrionda (Germany-England) to Koman Coulibaly (United States-Slovenia) to Carlos Batres (Spain-Paraguay), blown calls have never been in such abundance in a World Cup. Sure, they’re only human and they’re not getting too much help from FIFA as there could be extra officials on the touchlines or even instant replay, but some of these mistakes have been unforgivable. It’s a hard job to be the man in the middle, but to many, these men are nothing but villains who don’t have to explain themselves.

The Team Of The Tournament

By Dominic Vieira, Writing from Portugal

It wasn’t easy selecting the best XI from the World Cup, especially because many players performed at such a high level. This squad plays under the 4-3-3 formation, the winning tactic used by the Spanish national team and its not a surprise that the team is dominated by them.
