The 2011/12 Premier League poem…

Comedian (and AFR reader) Spencer Owen sent his brilliant “Premier League poem” our way. The poem reflects on all the madness that unveiled itself over the past nine months. With lines like, “Wigan learned the Premier League is no bed of roses. They survived thanks to the 11th commandment: Thou shalt not sell Moses” we tip our hat to you, Spencer.  The 2011/2012 Premier League was _______ !

Sensational? Breathtaking? Astounding? Following Manchester City’s emphatic, well deserved, nail biting 3-2 victory over QPR; it’s fair to say that the most electrifying football is played in England. We’ve been entertained with another extraordinary season which is brilliantly portrayed in this video, labelling the Premier League as “the most envied in the world”.

But, how would you describe it?  [posted by DV]

Chelsea win the FA Cup, are on to something special…

A few months ago, Chelsea winning the FA Cup seemed absurd. And the Champions League? Well, if you were even thinking about that then you were either entirely out of your mind or some kind of evil genius. But somehow, Roberto Di Matteo has inspired Chelsea’s old guard to do the unthinkable. After watching this match, Bayern Munich will know that they have no easy test awaiting them.

The Aston Villa of Alex McLeish: Down Amongst the Dead?

By Andrew McGowan

As Fernando Torres streaked implausibly through, tiptoed around Victor Valdes and rolled home to plunge a fervid Camp Nou into agonising self-doubt last night, a very different footballing psychodrama was playing out in the West Midlands.

The Aston Villa of Alex McLeish - a man whose football is so nihilistic, his programme notes could be ghosted by Ayn Rand - were constructing their last attacks of a desperate night, an exhausted heavyweight’s sweat-blinded haymakers when he’s down on all the scorecards. But Bolton held firm - in as much as Bolton, who typically display the tensile strength of loose blancmange, ever hold firm - and as Barry Bannan’s last-ditch southpaw swing ran wide, Villa found themselves thigh-deep in the relegation quicksand. The exotic, garlicky otherness of a European campaign had been within the Villans’ reach as recently as two years ago.

The title race is back!
Manchester United 4 - 4 Everton - Perfect crosses, glorious goals, last minute wonder saves, free flowing football and constant drama. Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the Premier League!
Probably the best 45 minutes of football seen in a long, long time. The second half was a demonstration of Premier League football at its finest, although La Liga may be dominating Europe and played at superior technical level, the passion displayed today is incomparable. By the 70th minute United were playing like champions, cruising with a 4-2 victory under their control. But the opponent never gave up and after Evra unluckily hit the post, they scored 2 late goals in two minutes to equalize a thrilling encounter. Unbelievable, unimaginable; but certainly not unexpected.
Both sides played with the objective to the win where Welbeck was sublime combining effectively with Rooney who became United’s 4th all time top scorer. The men in blue were equally magnificent with Jelavic consistently tormenting, Fellaini powerfully performing like a king and experienced right back Hibbert crossing like Beckham. United had the chances to win, but their amateur defending cost them another 2 crucial points. On the other side of the field, credit must be awarded to David Moyes and his tireless Everton team who displayed infinite collective determination.
The title race is pumping again and Ferguson is fuming as his Manchester United have accumulated 1 point from their last two matches, but they’re still in the lead. Now the attention focusses on the Molineux Stadium where Wolves host Manchester City. In theory, this is an easy win for the visitors or will the Premier League spark another Sunday surprise? [posted by DV]

The Arsenal Ballet.

Always appreciative of attempts to fuse together the beautiful game with fine arts, this spot for the Citroën DS5 was pretty well-executed. While the location looks like a luxurious room at Versailles, Arsenal’s Alex Song, Wojciech Szczesny, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Bacary Sagna learn ballet with dancers from the English National Ballet. And if that doesn’t do it for you, Arsenal legend Martin Keown is casually providing the music on the piano in the background. The four players seem comfortable enough in such a foreign environment, but I’m sure Per Mertesacker is still celebrating the fact that he didn’t have to partake. [posted by EB]

The Premier League or nothing: Sir Alex is in his element

By Dominic Vieira

The 2011/12 Premier League is now Manchester United’s to win or lose. Alex Ferguson is sitting in a position which he’s overly familiar with, which is not only a throne of comfort but one where he freely shares his wise words to antagonize local rivals Manchester City as he bluntly indicated “A season lasts for a bit longer than three months.”

Sir Alex has made a valid point. In December, Manchester City were crystal clear favourites to lift England’s most prestigious crown and led the race until March. But their drop in form was exploited by the Red Devils who have accumulated 28 points from their previous 10 encounters. Surely the 1996 ghost of Kevin Keegan is haunting Roberto Mancini or is this typical Manchester United?
