Imagining the Iberian Championship: Catalunya claims Group A

By Dermot Corrigan, imagining in Madrid

When the Iberian Championships was first mooted (last month, here on A Football Report), there was some skepticism in Spain as to the concept’s viability, given the tightness of the club schedule, rivalries between different footballing authorities with competing jurisdictions, the logistical challenges involved, fraught political atmosphere etc. But due to the diligence and far-sightedness of those involved in the project, and the generosity of a certain gulf-oil-money fuelled TV broadcaster looking to break into vital European markets, the first round of games is now taking place during this week’s international break.

As is customary in Iberia, the draw was organised to give the better supported teams the best possible chance of progressing, with the top four ranked sides - Castilla, Catalunya, Euskadi and Valéncia - securing home advantage for two of their three group games. Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque did the honours at the neutral territory of the Andorran FA HQ, with the coaches and captains of all eight teams showing up for the event, along with a healthy smattering of regional political dignitaries and cultural figures. There was a surprisingly positive mood of friendship and fraternity among all involved, especially with the first tranches of TV money being delivered up front.

L’Equipe Petit - A great story about a little team in Catalunya with golden values

In Catalan, there’s a saying “amb un Parell de pebrots” or “with a couple of peppers”, which means to be brave and to face situations without fear. These little Catalan children play without any awareness of fear. When these boys and girls are on the pitch, fear does not exist. Joy and positivity dominate, like Barcelona’s possession. The game’s parameters do not base around winning or losing, but rather the idea of possibility. For every moment that these children continue to play is a moment filled with possibility. To pass. To shoot. To score. To win. To carry on playing for the sake of playing.

Pol mentions, “If one day I score, I’d be so happy that I’ll fly.” But hasn’t Pol already reached the clouds?

Another Rivalry, Another “Manita” at the Hands of Barcelona

by Elizabeth Hanchett, writing from Toronto

Yesterday’s Espanyol-Barcelona match marked the first “goleada” (when a team scores more than 4 goals) ever scored against Espanyol at home, at either of their stadiums, whether at the new stadium at Cornellà-El Prat (this being their second season there), at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Montjuïc, or any other stadiums hosting Espanyol throughout their 110-year history. Espanyol, whose full name is Reial Club Deportiu Espanyol de Barcelona, is the *other* Barcelona side, competing with “big brother” FC Barcelona for attention in the athletic haven that is Barcelona.

Més que un club no més? [More than a club no more?]

by Elizabeth Hanchett, writing from New York

In a completely unprecedented and unexpected move, the board at FC Barcelona announced this afternoon that its policy for accepting members (“socios” in Spanish, “socis” in Catalan) to the club was going to change.  The original policy, which has been going on for years now, especially since the propagation of “El Gran Repte”, begun in 2004 in an attempt to bring more revenue into the club, was that anyone, around the world, could become a member of FC Barcelona and have a voice in the club, as FC Barcelona is an organization run completely by its members.  The new policy, effective November 1, 2010, with restrictions beginning tomorrow, is that only existing members, relatives of members, and children under the age of 14 will be allowed to become card-carrying members of FC Barcelona.

With Sneijder out against Barcelona, will Inter Milan’s defence be able to stand their ground at Camp Nou?

Football - Inter Milan v FC Barcelona UEFA Champions League Semi Final First Leg

By Eric Beard

In Inter’s 3-1 victory over Atalanta at the San Siro, Wesley Sneijder “pulled the rectus femoris muscle in his left leg”, ruling him out for the return leg of the Champions League semifinals at the Camp Nou against defending champions FC Barcelona. Though Inter, coincidentally, also won their first match against Barça 3-1 in Milan, it will be an incredibly difficult task to keep the Blaugrana off the scoresheet in front of 90,000+ crazed Catalans.
