Best of… March’s first weekend (with Pictures and Video)
They say pictures are worth quite a few of words. Well how much is a round-up with words, pictures, and highlights worth? Here’s the best of the past weekend in football
1. Real Madrid 3-2 Sevilla.
Rafael Van Der Vaart sealed a last-minute winner for Real Madrid in an epic affair at the Bernabeu against Sevilla, and as a result Madrid are on top of La Liga’s table (tied on points with Barcelona, but with a better goal differential).
2. Arsenal 3-1 Burnley.
Arsene Wenger’s highly motivated side dominated Burnley 3-1 at the Emirates, though in truth the margin of victory could have been far greater. The squad has been united through Aaron Ramsey’s horrific ankle injury last week, and who would bet against the Gunners in their current form? Arsenal are now tied with Chelsea on points in the Premier League table.
3. Almeria 2-2 Barcelona.
It should be mentioned that the only reason Real Madrid are tied with Barça is because the Blaugrana failed to secure three points away at Almeria. Pep Guardiola’s side was not playing flowing football, and the home team did well to take advantage of the complacent Barcelona defence.
4. Chelsea 2-1 Stoke City
Definace as a motivation? Well why not? John Terry and Frank Lampard led the Blues to the FA Cup semifinals, and Carlo Ancelotti’s men won’t let the media slow them down.
5. Wolves 0-1 Manchester United
United are the masters of winning ugly, and this time it was the Red Devil demigod Paul Scholes who snatched the three points and sent Manchester United to the top of the table (although Chelsea do have a game in hand). Nevertheless, could we see Fergie’s men retain their Premier League title.
Honourable Mentions of the Weekend
Everton 5-1 Hull City
Mikel Arteta and Landon Donovan stole the show on the blue half of the Merseyside as Hull traveled to Goodison Park. While Landon’s 10-week loan spell is officially over with Everton, the Toffees’ supporters could not stop cheering the American international on. Landon scored Everton’s 4th with a powerful half-volley, and assisted Jack Rodwell on the 5th. Arteta, on the other hand, notched a brace for David Moyes’ side, and the Spaniard looked so happy to finally be back on the pitch in good form after his lengthy injury spell.
Reading 2-4 Aston Villa
Villa are showing their class in the cups this year, aren’t they? John Carew was the Man of the Match as his impeccable performance earned him a hat-trick, and was enough to send the Villans into the FA Cup semifinals.
