The role of Sporting Director is one which has attracted increasing levels of attention in recent years. There’s been enough written about it to bore even the most strident follower of backroom-staff-related stories (you know who you are). However, the imminent departure of Frank Arnesen is worth talking about. Despite the apparent “background” nature of his role, he has come under the spotlight on more than one occasion. A simple google search of his name will bring up countless juicy stories, notably his fractious relationship with Jose Mourinho, which ultimately resulted in the Special One’s departure.
