Our Game: Tackling Safety in Non-League Football

At AFR, we’re proud to have one of the most diverse audiences around. Some of you just sit back on the weekends and enjoy the football. Others still play for fun. Then there’s a fair share of you who are still competitive, even involved in non-league football. Even if the chance of “making it” has passed, we know loads of amateur and semi-professional players are living a life far away from the bright lights and divine pitches in the Premier League.

It’s seldom spoken about, but there have been tremendous difficulties for those who play for next to no payment. What is rarely mentioned, but ever-present in the game is the fact that injuries can end football participation, but can cost day jobs too. Insurance is often expensive for players and clubs, and occasionally it has been known for clubs without insurance to come under serious threat of extinction once its absence becomes a problem.

We’re happy to see someone finally taking a stand. Francis Duku, a enigmatic non-leaguer based out of London, founded Our Game, an easy to navigate support service for amateur and semi-pro footballers everywhere. Launched last month, Duku’s service intends to make life in football more satisfying and less risky for the players that already make such massive sacrifices to play.

The most important asset of Our Game? Insurance with significant discounts for players. Specifically, an introductory fee of around £1 a day allows players to join Our Game and enjoy its benefits, advice and support. Most importantly, they will be insured for free: £150 per night spent in hospital, £300 for a broken digit, £1,500 for a broken leg or dental treatment, and a robust pot for private physiotherapy.

There are plenty of other benefits to be found on the Our Game website, which will grow to offer support, advice, news, discounted equipment for sale and additional content developed specifically for non-league footballers. For those involved in these leagues, Our Game is long overdue. We’re happy to spread the word, and we hope that if you have a friend in non-league football, you’ll put this initiative on their radar.
