Sunday afternoon at Stamford Bridge, and a chorus of cheers from the Chelsea crowd greets Steve Clarke, Liverpool’s first team coach. A former Chelsea man, and assistant to Jose Mourinho in those heady days of Premiership titles and Champions League finals, the reception he received was befitting of a man who had help to guide Chelsea to the successful period in their history. The home crowd also reserved thunderous approval for the squad announcement - David Luiz, their new signing from Portuguese champions Benfica, was named on the bench.

But any welcome for one Fernando Torres was drowned out, lost in a sea of boos from 3,000 travelling Liverpool fans. Unlike  Clarke, Torres had not won anything at Liverpool - and that, of course, is why he made the switch to London Blue. The boos, however, were not an attempt to write out the immense impact he had in his three and a half barren years on Merseyside. The Travelling Kop were simply voicing their anger at the timing, the stinging remarks, and above all, the betrayal of the move.
