50 million quid. Yes, that’s the figure that’s been all over the news since last evening. 50 million quid, to take Fernando Torres to Chelsea. 50 million quid, to bring a misfiring striker to a club that’s out of sorts itself. It’s the age old cliche, isn’t it? That spending a lot of money can somehow make you happy?

This is my first post on AFR, and it’s an old-fashioned rant. About all the things that have been playing on my mind since last night, and indeed, bubbling under the surface since the Wayne Rooney saga which seems so long ago.

You can’t argue that Torres’ exit from Liverpool was inevitable, given how the season was going. That particular relationship had run its course. Fernando had told Liverpool he’d had enough. No amount of counselling would be enough. The club just had to pack its stuff and leave the spare key behind.
