Liverpool are going to use some of the £30m (£34m in potential clauses) profit from selling Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid to add AS Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani.

Rafael Benitez has wasted no time in filling the gap in Liverpool’s squad created by the £30m departure.

While Alonso was completing his medical and signing a four-year contract at the Bernabeu, Liverpool were agreeing a fee for Roma’s young midfield star Alberto Aquilani, which is believed to be £20m.

The 25-year-old is currently heading to Merseyside and he will have a medical tomorrow.

It has become clear that the two deals were being negotiated subsequently.

Once Liverpool had completed the Alonso transfer, and received the first cash instalment, they were been able to complete the deal for a player to replace the Spaniard in boss Rafael Benitez’s squad.

Rafa Benitez was hesitant to sell his Spanish midfielder, but has come to his senses to cash in on the 28-year-old midfielder in this summer’s inflated transfer market. However, supporter of the Kop might be thinking £20m is a bit extortionate to attain Aquilani’s services.
