U20 South American Championships: Day 1

The game was far from a classic, but Argentina won’t care, as they beat Uruguay 2-1 in the opening game of the tournament. Juan Iturbe’s last gasp ensured the Albiceleste came away with all three points.

The two teams kicked off under the boiling sun at the Estadio Monumental, with jitters clearly showing. It was not until the 20 minute mark that either side was cohesive enough to produce goal-scoring opportunity. The game looked to be stuttering to the end of a goal-less half, when Uruguay took the lead. A quick free- kick found Federico Rodriguez in the box, where he was chopped down by Leonel Galeano. Diego Polenta needed two tries, but the captain eventually put his country ahead. That’s how the score stayed at the break.
