The AFR Team has its say on the curious cases of Qatar & Russia: the surprise winner or the strongest bid? Or both?

The AFR team will be sharing its diverse perspectives on the drama that unfolded yesterday in Switzerland in a series of posts throughout the next day or so. The series features perspectives from our writers who call places like Montreal, Paris, Kuala Lumpur, Sydney, London, Manilla, Boston, and Lisbon home. We start with Ulysse Pasquier and Dominic Vieira’s perspectives from Montreal and Barcelona, respectively.

I don’t know what surprised me the most with yesterday’s events in Zurich, the fact that Qatar was chosen to host the 2022 World Cup or that England did not even go past the first round, merely receiving a stunning 2 votes. Don’t get me wrong, from an objective point of view (I may not have said the same if France were involved) I am very happy for both Russia and Qatar, being completely for FIFA’s recent policy and openness to change. Indeed, I believe a country that has never hosted a World Cup should have an important advantage on one that already has, I just can’t stop thinking however how strange this year’s particular voting process was and how illogical the results seem.
